Friday 19th October: Tim Walker: Story Teller via Lucy Bridge

Since Tim Walker's "Pictures" exhibition at The Design Museum in 2008 and Galleria Carla Sozzani in Milan 2010, the photographer / film maker has been prolifically producing enough shoots to warrant a new epic showcase at Somerset House " Tim Walker: Story Teller  ".  Continuing to work with Hillman Studio on curating the space with integrated props, here you can see some of the outsize set pieces in Lucy Bridge's photos from the private view on Wednesday night.  The stripped back style of Lucy's portrait is a direction the photographer has been pursuing in recent times, in a strand moving away from fantastical scenes and focusing exclusively on a subject for strength in engaging imagery.  I find it absolutely fascinating that when I see one of these stark and (deceivingly) simple portraits its distinctly the work of Walker ........... but what is it about such a straight forward set up that encapsulates his style?  Its not just his signature sensitive lighting or subtle positioning of the sitter, but the way he manages to connect with each star and get a strong essence of their real personality, not perhaps the associated identity you might expect.  Spanning realms of creativity (actors, directors, musicians, models, designers) Tim is documenting crucial moments from club kid subcultures to invaluable iconic imagery of legends willingly unveiling vulnerability such as Lee McQueen or Isabella Blow.
I cant wait to get down to Somerset House to see this massive selection of prints and props and pop into the book shop to flick thru the accompanying mammoth monograph.  There is also a Vidal Sassoon exhibition on at the same time!
Thanks to makeup artist Lucy for sharing her snaps - check out her site here and read my archive interview with her here
