Friday 5th April: Gemma Tickle & Bruno Drummond for NIKE AIR MAX REINVENTED

Nike celebrated the 25th birthday of their Air Max innovation, inviting 5 London based creatives to reinvent Air Max models including the partnership of set designer / photographer Gemma Tickle and Bruno Drummond.  The duo were asked to come up with something relating the Air Max 90 to the early 90s rave scene.  This led them to researching rave flyer artwork and the common theme of one-point perspective, futuristic grids and levitating elements.  To translate this medium they used the panelled 2D shapes and extruded them with a grid as a 'forced perspective' to create the optical illusion of a vast futuristic space.  The final image has a hyperreal quality which was actually achieved in camera, with the only retouching being removing the wire used for rigging and a little colour tweeking of the materials.  Here are Gemma's sketches, technical drawings and behind the scenes snaps which document the process which prepared the final slick graphic print.
See how the complete exhibition looked here.

If a friend is going travelling I often ask to feature their photos as a little international perspective for the blog and record of colour elsewhere in the world, other than East London!!  Here are some of Kitty Joseph's snaps, summing up her sunny time in San Fransisco - some of which Im guessing are around the Castro district with these rainbows!  Beautiful!!

Mon 1st April: Michael Kostiff's World Archive at DSM

Whilst your'e at DSM to see Michael's book you must go up a few floors to visit his "World Archive" section - currently with a "Silk Road" theme - absolute heavenly selection of artefacts and garments.  I want it all!

Monday April 1st: Michael Kostiff's book signing at DSM via Kim Jakobsen To

Thanks to Kim Jakobsen-To for his photos from Michael Kostiff's book signing at Dover Street Market for his very first publication "Michael & Gerlinde's World:  Pages from a Diary". The photographic monograph illustrates the atmosphere and characters of the London club scene during the 1970's - 1990's from his Kinky Gerlinky perspective.  These previously unseen images from his personal diaries document a broad spectrum of events and personalities he has encountered - including Jeffrey Hinton (seen here at the signing).  A selection of these shots have been hung with reproductions of posters and flyers in a mini exhibition on the ground floor of DSM to give insight into "Michael & Gerlinde's World".
